My research is focused on uncovering novel chemotherapeutic agents or their targets against type 2 diabetes, trypanosomiasis and malaria. Specifically, for malaria and trypanosomiasis, my interest is to use a combination of structural biology, molecular biology, in vitro and in vivo studies to discover new therapeutic candidates with defined molecular targets to combat the two diseases. In these regards, I have reported the potentials of ellagic acid, stigmasterol, phytol, geranylacetone and others, as antitrypanosomal and antimalarial candidates. I am also working on the gene cloning, expression and crystallization of a GPI-linked trypanosomal protein and the discovery of selective inhibitors against it. For type 2 diabetes research, I have so far investigated the antidiabetic effects of African medicinal plants from where I arrived at four distinct bioactive antidiabetic compounds. Thus, my current direction is also focused in subjecting these compounds along the drug discovery pipeline. Additionally, in the area of bioactive peptides, I have successfully designed novel and multifunctional anti-diabetic peptides using, in silico, in vitro and cell culture-based studies. I am currently pursuing that line with the hope of identifying novel peptide-based antidiabetic candidates. With respect to unravelling new chemotherapeutic targets against type 2 diabetes, I have been working from the perspective of glycobiology in an attempt to completely elucidate the involvement of some glycoconjugates to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. Overall, my research experience is diverse ranging from computational modelling, natural product research including the use of GC-MS, HPLC and NMR, cell culture based techniques, animal based preclinical studies, and molecular biology techniques such as qPCR for mRNA quantification as well as gene cloning and expression techniques.
