Career Trajectory
Bio
Wildlife behaviour, especially individual variation, social behaviour and conservation behaviour, are my main research interests. During my first MSc thesis at Wageningen University (Netherlands), I investigated parental care differences between migrating and non-migrating barnacle geese and during my second MSc thesis at The Simon Fraser University (Canada), I studied if anthropogenic structures and activities affect the spatial distribution of dabbling ducks in agricultural fields. I have a special interest in how individuals weigh the risk and benefits of particular situations, for example, social situations. As part of my PhD at Wageningen University, I used a novel tracking system and a self-designed video-playback experiment to study the effects of personality on proximity and communication networks in great tits. I additionally collaborated with the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB-Berlin, Germany), examining how social information transmission improves the decision accuracy in human groups. For 1 year, I was a postdoc at the Leibniz-IGB, supported by an IGB Postdoc Fellowship, studying the role of social networks in the foraging dynamics of wild Trinidadian guppies followed by 1.5 years as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Leibniz-IZW studying personality and migration strategies in noctule bats. At that time, I was also awarded a Klaus-Tschira Boost Grant to continue my guppy research with the IGB. At the moment, I am working on social foraging in guppies at Wageningen University in collaboration with the IGB-Berlin and now work as Assistant Professor and NWO-Veni fellow.
