Luis completed a Master’s degree in Conservation Biology and a PhD in Zoology at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. He has developed his career in both international cooperation and development and conservation sectors for 20 years. His first international experience in research and conservation was in Venezuela in 1996-1997 at the La Salle Museum of Natural History where he collaborated on a study of the amphibians of the Venezuelan Tepuys. He extended his work to other ecosystems in Venezuela for four years: Amazon jungle, Alto and Delta Orinoco River, Los Llanos and Andes mountains. After conducting many censuses and surveys on threatened species in the Iberian Peninsula between 2000 and 2006, he moved to Southern Asia to work on conservation projects in the Vietnamese northern limestone landscape and the Mekong River axis in Cambodia until 2010. An affiliated researcher with the evolution and conservation biology research group of the Complutense University since 2008, he is currently based in Ethiopia where he manages projects and programmes on sustainable development in Eastern Africa. Since 2014, Luis was appointed co-chair of the IUCN SSC Stork, Ibis & Spoonbill Specialist Group.
