LMP Fernandes graduated in Physics Engineering in 1999 and completed a PhD degree in Physics in 2005, both from the University of Coimbra. He applied for several projects as Principal Investigator (PI) and was successful in 6 projects funded by FCT and FEDER through program COMPETE with a total budget of 865 kEUR:

LMP Fernandes started his scientific career after completing his PhD. The postdoc fellowship started in 2005 allowed a strong involvement in two collaborations, XENON and CREMA, to perform the XENON10 dark matter search and the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift experiments. Within the CREMA collaboration, he was responsible for the x-ray detection system in the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift experiment.
In 2009, LMP Fernandes started a contract as Assistant Investigator at the Instrumentation Centre. In this period, he assumed full responsibility for the x-ray detection system used in the muonic hydrogen and muonic helium Lamb shift experiments. The results of the first experiment were published in Nature (2010) and Science (2013), with great impact in the scientific community. He joined the NEXT collaboration, which aims to build a 100 kg high-pressure Xe TPC to search for the neutrinoless double beta decay at the Laboratorio Subterraneo de Canfranc (LSC, Spain). Within this collaboration, he was involved in R&D activities of photosensors suitable for the detection of the primary and secondary scintillation in the xenon TPC, namely PMTs (in Coimbra) and SiPMs (in Valencia).
In 2014, LMP Fernandes started an Invited Scientist fellowship from project PTDC/FIS-NUC/0843/2012, as PI of the project. He was fully dedicated to the muonic helium Lamb shift experiment in this period (14 months) and was at PSI for long periods to participate in the experiment.
In April 2015, LMP Fernandes started a contract as Principal Investigator at the Instrumentation Centre, after a successful application in the 2014 FCT Investigator call. In the scope of the NEXT experiment, he was involved in studies with SiPMs (at IFIC, Valencia, Spain) and in studies with molecular additives to xenon to decrease electron diffusion, performed in Coimbra under the PhD program of a student, supervised by LMP Fernandes. In the scope of the CREMA collaboration he was involved in data analysis from the muonic helium Lamb shift experiment and was at PSI to participate in tests of 2 beam lines as starting point for the preparation of the next experiment to be performed by the collaboration (1S hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen).
In September 2020, LMP Fernandes initiated a permanent contract as Assistant Professor at the University of Coimbra (Department of Physics).
LMP Fernandes co-supervised the activities of 3 MSc and 5 PhD students, together with one postdoc researcher. He was a member of the organizing committee of 3 international conferences (EXRS 2010, IBER 2011 and IWORID 2012), and organised a meeting of the CREMA collaboration in February 2020 in Coimbra. He cooperated in the peer review of about 30 manuscripts for IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science and Journal of Instrumentation. He was a member of the jury of 9 postgraduate exams. In 2017 he started the coordination of GIAN (Grupo de Instrumentação Atómica e Nuclear), being a member of the scientific commission of LIBPhys-UC. In 2019 he became a member of the Portuguese Society of Physics, and was elected for the direction of the Centre regional delegation.
