个人简介
I study animal behavior, applied ecology and conservation biology of birds, unraveling the tricks they use in the field or in the laboratory. Birds make decisions as if they were optimizing the outcomes. But most of the times their performance just meets the needs without getting the maximum benefit, which represents an interesting evolutionary problem. Those who manage to maximize the benefit could leave more offspring, right?
My research started in 1986, in an ecosystem with thousands of common cranes foraging in fields of wheat and barley during winter. I have also studied in UK and the Netherlands a bunch of starlings working for food, either in high and low food availabilities, which were controlled by a computer program designed to test some predictions of optimal foraging theory. A computer connected to automatic feeders was again (last years of 20th century) the method used to study very small birds ( Periparus ater , <11 g) foraging in pairs or isolated. When food delivery is somehow unpredictable, a new doubly exponential model fitted quite well the daytime routines of body mass gain in this and other bird species.
Back into the Spanish Research Council (CSIC), I study the effects of landscape structure and agri-environmental programs in mobility of the sexually dimorphic great bustards. The interaction between diet, daily foraging routine, sexual selection and body size could explain the sexual segregation of great bustards. Sexual biology of great bustards is still an intriguing phenomenon: perhaps males self-medicate to improve their mating chances!
