个人简介
Part-time ornithologist since 1991, full-time since 1999. 14 years as environmental consultant (ERENA), seven years as researcher (CIBIO and CEABN/ ISA), and 22 months in environment NGO (SPEA/ BirdLife, coordinating the 3rd Portuguese Red List of Birds and Breeding Bird Atlas). Currently in charge of estuarine waterbird monitoring, and advisor in saltmarsh boardwalk construction works, for Loures municipality. Also responsible for monitoring the largest-ever passerine nestbox scheme in Portugal (800+ boxes), and consultant in the natural heritage evaluation of 42 state-managed estates (totalling 11,000 ha), for Florestgal SA (national Forest Development and Management Company). Experience as project manager, international fieldworker, bird-tour guide, course instructor, etc. Expert in Western Palearctic bird identification, plus sound recording and processing. PT Rarities Committee member (1995-97), BirdLife PT Council Vice-President (2008-10).
PhD in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution; thesis about Ecological Speciation in Birds (Porto & Lund universities, 2020). Degree in Biology Applied to Terrestrial Animal Resources; thesis subject: Effects of Hunting and Game Management on Birds (Lisbon University, 2002). Other courses: Molecular Ecology and Evolution (Lund 2011), Mutivariate Statistics in R, Behavioural Ecology (both Porto 2012), etc.
Main research areas: Applied Ecology, Evolution and Behavioural Ecology; with four key research lines:
1) Effects of field management and landscape context on birds of Mediterranean grassland (aka pseudosteppe, cereal-steppe or farmland) in Southern Portugal, including grazing regimes and habitat fragmentation. Connections with CAP reform, conservation and agri-environment schemes. Calandra Lark (Melanocorypha calandra) as case-study;
2) Effects of hunting and game management on Mediterranean birds, like raptors and ground-nesting birds, in southern Portugal, including predator control and habitat management. Conservation implications and conflicts arising from such effects;
3) Responses of Mediterranean birds to forest management, including fuel management to decrease fire risk, and landscape effects on large scale abundance patterns. Relating responses with disturbance ecology, ecological succession, frugivory, landscape mosaics, conservation and habitat selection; using assemblages and model species: Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur);
4) Causes and consequences of phenotypic divergence in continental birds, including divergent natural selection, local adaptation, sexual selection, reproductive isolation and speciation. Focus on birdsong, subspecies acoustic divergence, singing styles, playback response, song discrimination and asymmetric recognition. Also morphologic (mostly in bill and wing) and ecological divergence (in foraging isotopic niche). Empirical studies on West European Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus).
