个人简介
Luis García Fernández obtained his Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering by the University of Castilla la Mancha in 2004. At the beginning of 2005 he obtained a FPI grant for developing his doctoral thesis at the Biomaterials group of the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology (ICTP, CSIC). He obtained his European PhD degree with the thesis “Synthesis and development of new antiangiogenic polymers”. The thesis was qualified with “cum laude” and awarded with the European Society of Biomaterials Doctoral Award by the European Society of Biomaterials (ESB).
During his PhD he also participates in different projects:
* Chitosan-gelatin biopolymers as carrier substrata for limbal epithelial stem cells
* Thermosensitive Macroporous Cryogels Functionalized with Bioactive Chitosan/Bemiparin Nanoparticles.
He did several stays in well recognized European Research Centers in Italy and Germany developing different skills and techniques.
* University of Trento (Italy): Design of an electrospinning process for the preparation of fibers mats for drug delivery.
* University of Mainz (Germany): Introduction to advanced biological techniques and design of a 3D model for angiogenesis test.
After the PhD, he spent several years at Max-Planck institute for polymer research in Mainz (Germany) were he developed different research lines and collaborations with different international groups:
* Dual Photosensitive Polyurethanes with wavelength-selective photoresponse (Collaboration with University of Strasbourg): Design of polyurethane systems that photopolymerize and photodegrade upon exposure to light of different wavelength. The chromic response is based on two caged monomers with the ability to be activated or photocleaved with different wavelengths under single and two-photon excitation.
* Catechol derivatives for antibacterial coatings: Inspired by the amino acid 2-chloro-4,5-dihydroxyphenylalanine, present in the composition of the proteinaceous glue of the sandcastle worm, a simple strategy is presented to confer antifouling properties to polymer surfaces using a bioinspired biocide.
* Surface modification of polymers by plasma (Collaboration with Saarland University): They describe a method for generating nanostructures at the surface of commercial medical polymers, and their potential for preventing biofilm formation.
* Torrent frog-inspired adhesives (Collaboration with University of Glasgow): The amazing adhesion of gecko pads to almost any kind of surfaces has inspired a very active research direction over the last decade. This project reviews the fabrication approaches used so far for the creation of micro- and nanostructured fibrillar surfaces with adhesive properties.
* Study of cell behavior by QCM-D (Collaboration with University of Munich): The Quartz Crystal Microbalance with dissipation technique was applied to monitor and quantify integrin-RGD recognition during the early stages of cell adhesion.
In the year 2014, he returned to the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology, developing different innovative research lines based on tissue regeneration and new treatments with hydrogels based on natural polymers. In the year 2018 he move to the Centro de Investigaciones Biomédicas en Red (CIBER-BBN) where continue with the research in tissue regeneration and the development of new technologies for biomedical applications.
Dr. García-Fernández published mora than 30 research articles (more than 25 in Q1), 5 book chapters and he is coauthor of 3 patens. Actually, he is in charge of a PhD student and he is the principal investigator (PI) of an intramural project from the CIBER-BBN. He presented in more than 40 international conferences and 6 national conferences, being invited in 7 of the international conferences.
In the last years, Dr. García-Fernández has collaborated with the Universidad San Pablo CEU teaching in the subject of Tissue Engineering and Advanced Therapies (Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals). He was Scientific Secretary in two international conferences with more than 1500 participant and he was co-editor of the corresponding book of abstracts. He was accredited by ANECA as profesor contratado doctor, profesor ayudante doctor y profesor de universidad privada. Actually, he participated as scientific evaluator in high impact research journals being Guest Editor on a Special Issue in the journal Polymers.
