个人简介
I am a molecular biologist with a ‘Clinical Research and International Health’ MPH and an ‘AIDS Pathogenesis and Treatment’ MSc. I completed a PhD in Medicine and Translational Research at the University of Barcelona focused on early diagnosis and monitoring of HIV infection in Sub-Saharan Africa. The PhD program was fully supported by the Spanish Ministry of Health (ISCIII) and co-supervised by 2 thesis directors and 4 participating institutions. Throughout the doctoral degree, I developed a project (acronym GAMA) that was co-funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Spanish Ministry of Science. This project was a multi-site collaboration involving 7 research institutes across the globe where I played the active role of study coordinator. While based in a rural community in Mozambique working at the Manhica Health Research Center (CISM) for almost 2 years, I trained, managed and led a multidisciplinary-team, and I also supervised patient recruitment, data collection and sample processing. Later on, I accomplished the quantification and data analysis of 76 soluble and 36 cell-associated biomarkers in the study samples using ELISA and Luminex multianalyte profiling technology and advance Flow-cytometry for multi-panel immune-phenotypic analysis, respectively. The findings from this analysis provided a detailed characterization of immune biomarkers over the different stages of HIV infection. This work shed light into the early pathogenic events following HIV acquisition and allowed the identification of IP-10 as an accurate screening biomarker for acute HIV infection or treatment failure detection that set the basis for the development of an IP-10 rapid test by Mondial Diagnostics non-profit organization. Consequently, the project resulted, as yet, in 8 peer-reviewed articles in high impact factor journals (7/8 open access) and 5 international conference presentation. Thus, I acquired a deep knowledge in immunology and viral pathogenesis and became focused towards challenging research projects aimed to improve the understanding of biological systems and pathologies that threaten public health.
Currently, I am working as a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Florida (UF), College of Medicine, Dept. of Pathology Immunology and Laboratory Medicine, in a NIH-funded collaborating project between the UF Genetic Institute and the UF Diabetes Institute. This research position focuses on genetics and pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, in particular type 1 diabetes. The project goal is to determine the effects of differential expression on type 1 diabetes associated genes through CRISPR gene-edition on lymphocyte-cell lines and RNA-sequencing analysis.
