个人简介
Lourdes Calvo is Full Professor in Chemical Engineering at the Complutense University of Madrid.
Her research work is related to the development of Supercritical Fluids technology and its application to different processes. Her current research lines are a) sterilization of sensitive materials in the sanitary field; b) extraction of bioactive compounds from plants, algae and for waste valorisation, and c) nano encapsulation by supercritical extraction of emulsions of bioactive components and drugs.
Being responsible of the Advanced Supercritical-based Processes lab at the UCM, she has acquired extensive experience in the design, construction, and set-up of high-pressure installations.
Funding came from her participation in 21 grants, two of them of the European Union (REACT, FP7), as well as from her collaboration with companies. She was the Principal Investigator (PI) of 3 projects of the national plan (from the Spanish Government), 1 of complementary actions, 1 of the Ministry of Defence, 3 of foundations and of 13 signed with private companies.
As a result of this work, she published 4 patents, 45 papers (75% Q1), 2 international educational publications, 1 book chapter and numerous communications (>50) in international congresses (3 keynotes) and as invited speaker (in professional forums). Some of her publications on particle stabilization and enzymatic activity in supercritical CO2 were the most downloaded from the journal J. Supercritical Fluids. Two of her latest papers in the preparation of nanocapsules by supercritical extraction of emulsions were chosen the best of this journal by the Editor in Chief and won the prize for the best contribution in the XXI international congress of bioencapsulation.
These publications have earned her four sexenios, the last of which is still in force.
She was the advisor of 5 defended doctoral theses (two European), two with Extraordinary Doctorate Award and of one in development. She supervised the Master´s Thesis of 22 students. She also supervised numerous undergraduate students (26), practices in research centres (6), Erasmus Master´s Thesis (6) and visiting researchers (3).
She regularly participates in international congresses and scientific committees. She frequently collaborates in the review of papers in high impact journals and in projects of the national plan.
She is currently participating in the Greenering Cost Action promoting the use of green solvents in the chemical industry and in the dissemination activities of this program.
She is member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Supercritical Fluids, being the Guest Editor of a special issue on sterilization. She is vice-president of the FLUCOMP Iberian association for the promotion of supercritical fluids (www.flucomp.es), member of the International Society for the Advancement of Supercritical Fluids (ISASF) and of the Spanish National Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers (ANQUE).
In her 23 years of teaching, she has specialized in Separation Processes, more specifically in Advanced Operations as Azeotropic Distillation and Supercritical Extraction. She is knowledgeable in the simulation of these processes using Aspen Plus. For 20 years she has taught a course on industrial processes based on supercritical fluids in the Master of Process Engineering at UCM. In these fields, she leaded 3 teaching innovation projects.
She belongs to the UCM research group entitled "Processes of Separation and Preparation of Materials in Sustainable Chemistry using Supercritical Fluids, ref 910632, https://www.ucm.es/leffs/" which brings together researchers in chemical engineering, and physical chemistry. The aim is to promote the use of green solvents, specifically, supercritical CO2 in the design and improvement of chemical processes.
She is member of the Commission of the Doctoral Programme in Chemical Engineering of the UCM from 2013-14 to present, and is representative on the Teaching and Research Staff Board.
She has experience in the organization of scientific meetings at national and international level.
In 1999, she received the Young Researcher Award by the UCM Foundation in the field of Environment and Sustainable Development, endowed with 18,000 €.
In 2015 her project was Winner of the V Edition of the University Entrepreneur Awards, 2015.
She is also participating in several actions regarding the promotion of STEM vocations in young women and the use of social networks for employment of the PhD students.
