Dr Lorraine Anderson (Medical Director: medicaldirector@kamsc.org.au)
Dr Anderson traces her Aboriginal heritage to the Palawa people of Tasmania. She has many years experience as a lead clinician in rural and remote Western Australia and rural New Zealand and has been involved in several lifestyle and chronic disease translation projects over a number of years. In her current role as KAMS’ Medical Director she provides strategic leadership to KAMS and Kimberley Renal Services CEO and Boards on Aboriginal health policy and planning. A key role is communicating with all stakeholders on medical policy, needs and practices. She manages the Clinical Services Team, which includes the Departments of Remote Services, Population Health, Kimberley Supports (NDIS), Pharmacy and Research.
Dr Anderson represents the KAMS Clinical services team on the Kimberley Aboriginal Health Planning Forum including on the Kimberley Chronic Disease Subcommittee, Kimberley Research Subcommittee, Kimberley Sexual Health Subcommittee and the Palliative Care Subcommittee. She is also a member of the review committee for the Kimberley Clinical Protocols and the Kimberley Standard Drug List. She chairs the Kimberley ACCHS Lead Clinicians Forum, which aims to align primary health policy across the region and is an active member of the Aboriginal Health Council of WA Lead Clinicians Forum, advocating for improved services and systems through the WA ACCHO sector. Dr Anderson also chairs the Regional Community Committee of the WA Primary Health Alliance, the purpose of which is to support healthcare integration in the region by sharing insights, information and knowledge and strengthen local collaboration between stakeholders in primary care. Dr Anderson is also a member of:
• Communicable Diseases Network of Australia
• ABS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Surveys Advisory Group
• Various antimicrobial stewardship committees in the Kimberley and Northern Australia and involved in the set up of the Hot North Antimicrobial stewardship academy
• COVID-19 Clinical Evidence Paediatric and Adolescent Care Panel
• Syphilis Outbreak Response Group

• Kimberley Ear Health Coordination panel
• WAPHA - Kimberley Health Primary Health Care Collaborative
• Kimberley Leprosy working group
• SASA Governance committee (KAMS)
Dr Anderson has been a leader within the ACCHS sector’s COVID-19 response as a key member of the Australian Government’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Group on COVID-19. She is also a member of the WA COVID-19 Aboriginal Advisory Group. She has consistently advocated for policies and resources that support the strengthening of the ACCHS sector in implementing COVID-19 prevention and preparedness strategies, including the introduction of point-of-care COVID-19 PCR testing in regional and remote communities.
With a passion for good primary health care and chronic disease management, Dr Anderson will support integration between usual clinic activity and programs at KAMS Dr Anderson also has regular contact with all GP teaching doctors and practices in the region, so is in a good position to manage the translation of innovation to the next generation of clinicians. Dr Anderson’s membership of the groups listed above will assist in the sharing of strategies used in and experiences gained by research undertaken, widely in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services and state government health services.
