His main research interests are in the field of millimeter-wave and terahertz components and antenna technologies, as well as active and passive imaging systems, laser technology, and microwave/photonic interaction.,Dr. Schmidt is a Member of VDE, the Chairman of the VDE/ITG Expert Group on Microwave Techniques, and a member of the German IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques/Antennas and Propagation Chapter Commission. In 2003, he served as the General Chairman of the European Microwave Week and the Chairman of the European Microwave Conference in Munich, and was the German representative in the EuMA General Assembly until 2010. In 2013, he served as the Chairman of the European Microwave Conference in Nuremberg. He was the recipient of the Microwave Prize of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) in 2013.
