Career Trajectory
Bio
I was graduated in Biology by the UAB. In 2009 I obtained the MSc. in Advanced Immunology and I defended my PhD thesis in Immunology supervised by Dr. Carme Roura-Mir, on February 1st 2016 at the UAB obtaining the highest qualification with International Mention (Excellent Cum Laude). My PhD thesis project was the analysis of the role of immunoregulatory T cells (iNKT and Treg cells) in the control of the autoimmune response in human T1D. I studied how human iNKT and Treg cells suppress the effector function of autoreactive T cells in these patients (Usero L et al. 2016. Diabetes). During all this period I’ve participated in different projects leaded by other research groups (Pifarré et al, 2014) and as PhD student I was awarded with two Short-term fellowships to do research at two international research centers.
In 2011, I joined the laboratory of Dr. C. Gil (Genomics and Proteomics Center, Pharmacy School, at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid), in order to learn the Laser Microdissection Technique, important for my thesis project. In 2013, I joined the Multiple Sclerosis Research group led by Mireia Sospedra and Roland Martin (University Hospital Zurich, Neurology Clinic, Neuroimmunology Dept., Zurich). Upon the studies on iNKT and Treg cells distribution in the pancreas and after completing a training course on spectral confocal microscopy organized by Microscopy Service of the UAB together with the company Leica Microsystems, I have a great experience with this microscopy technique and the image analysis software. In 2017, I joined to the Institut de Transplantation-Urologie-Néphrologie (ITUN), CHU Nantes UMR 1064, INSERM, Université de Nantes (France) and my postdoctoral project was based on the
study of peptide vaccination in transplantation allowed me to identify donors antigens derived from MHC-II molecules capable to be recognized by CD8+CD45RClow Tregs which had been demonstrated their requirement for inhibition of acute rejection and their superior suppressive capacity (Picarda et al 2019, Usero et al. Manuscript in progress). Actually, I am working in the AIDS Research Group in Hospital Clinic de Barcelona (IDIBAPS) in a project about the in vitro studies of a new developed HIV vaccine based on mRNA in order to induce of HIVspecific
T cell responses (Lorena Usero et al. 2021, Journal of Immunological Methods; Ignasi
Esteban et al. 2021, Viruses; Carmen Elena Gómez et al. 2021, Vaccines; Lorena Usero.et al, Manuscript in progress). In addition to working on projects related to the HIV vaccine, I am also participating on projects related to SARS-COV2/COVID19 based on a vaccine of mRNA. As for the technical skills, I have an extensive training in cell culture, specially lymphocytes and DCsfrom monocytes, as well as and their functional characterization including proliferation (Thy-H3 incorporation, CFSE staining) and cytokine secretion assays (ELISA, Luminex and Cytometric Bead Array). In addition, I’m proficient in different gene expression techniques (PCR, qPCR,RNA extraction, retrotranscription) as well as in flow cytometry coupled to cell sorting. Because of the great interest of using animal models to study human pathologies, I have obtained thefinal certification for the training in animal experimentation andmanipulation last September 2016. This certification is recognized by the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (Felasa).
