Bio
Dr. Lorena Moscardelli is a Venezuelan-American geoscientist with more than 20 years of experience in both the energy industry and academia. She got a degree in Geological Engineering from Central University of Venezuela (2000) and a PhD in Geological Sciences from The University of Texas at Austin (2007). She started her career as an exploration geologist in PDVSA working as a stratigrapher in the Plataforma Deltana region. Her doctoral degree focused on the study of deep-water deposits and processes in eastern offshore Trinidad and Tobago with special emphasis on the study of subaqueous landslides. After obtaining her PhD, Dr. Moscardelli joined the State of Texas Advanced Resource Recovery Program (STARR) at BEG as a seismic interpreter. Later on, she co-founded and co-directed the Quantitative Clastic Laboratory Consortium at BEG where she oversaw the deep-water component of the program. She taught graduate level classes at the Jackson School of Geosciences on petroleum geology and subsurface mapping, she supervised PhD and master students and published extensively on a wide range of topics from deep-water deposits and processes to planetary geology.
In 2013, Dr. Moscardelli joined Statoil (now Equinor) where she worked as a researcher providing support to exploration projects in the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), offshore Canada and the Gulf of Mexico. Most recently, she was deployed within field development units in the NCS to oversee overburden management activities in the Tampen-Spur area and updates of geological models in the Vøring Basin. Dr. Moscardelli is a proud 2020 GRIT awardee, and was recently awarded the Medal of Merit for best paper related to Canadian petroleum geology by the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geology. Dr. Moscardelli has been appointed as the Principal Investigator of STARR at the Bureau of Economic Geology, Jackson School of Geosciences where she will continue to promote STARR’s mission of conducting and leading research to increase the efficient production and profitability of energy resources in the State of Texas.
