Bio
I grew up in the Western Cape. After completing my high school education, I attended the University of Stellenbosch. I spent 10 years in the School of Process Engineering as an undergraduate and later a postgraduate student. I was a Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company undergraduate bursary holder in 1998/9. As part of my PhD studies, I spent a total of 15 months at the laboratories of the Institut de Recherches sur la Catalyse, Centre National de la Rescherche Scientifique (IRC-CNRS), Villeurbanne, France. The research visits were partly sponsored by a NRF/CNRS French Embassy doctoral fellowship, which I received in 2001/03. I was a holder of various Sasol Postgraduate Merit Bursaries. I was a Y2 rated with the National Research Foundation. I am a associate professor in the School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand.
I began my research career working on activated carbon from agricultural waste. My PhD studies focused on high temperature applications of ceramic membranes of the extractor type. I was involved in the development of proton conductive fuel cell membranes and when this project came to an end, the focus of my research changed. I became interested in finding solutions for some of the environmental problems we face today while generating revenue from waste materials. Consequently, I began collaborating with different researchers and currently I am a member of the Minerals and Metals Extraction and Recovery Group at Wits, the DRD Gold group and the Industrial and Mining Water Research Unit. Some of the projects where I play a leading role include, the development of a gas phase process for extracting metals from previously discarded solid materials, development of processes to treat acid mine water, super critical extraction of gold, ionic liquid extraction of valuable metals from mine tailing and projects related to the utilization of fly ash and other solid waste materials. I hold a fourth degree in financial accounting and I try to apply this knowledge to my existing research by including the economics. I have recently finished a postgraduate diploma in higher education and have done some educational research to improve student pass rates in my Reaction Engineering course.
I am an active member of the South African Institution of Chemical Engineers (SAIChE). I am the honourary treasurer and the vice president of SAIChE. I have served on the organising commitees of conferences such as the SAIChE National conference 2012, Hydrometallurgy 2009 & 2016. I have reviewed papers for Hydrometallurgy, the SAIMM Journal and the Journal of Membrane Science.
In general I see my purpose as researcher and academic as one where I need to promote the profession of Chemical Engineering and strive to find sustainable solutions for global challenges that we face today.
