Career Trajectory
Bio
Lijckle van der Laan studied medicine at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. After obtaining his MD degree in 1992 he did his national service in Rotterdam. During this period he completed his research project entitled energy state of ischemic skeletal muscle (prof. dr. C. Ince and prof. dr. H.A. Bruining) at the department of surgery, Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam. In 1993 he started as resident on the emergency department of the Erasmus Medical Centre. He switched in 1994 to the University of Nijmegen to start a PhD program at the department of surgery (prof. dr. J.A. Goris). The thesis concerns clinicals studies and basal chemical studies to investigate the pathophysiology of complex regional pain syndrome. His general surgical training was started in 1997 at the University of Nijmegen. The last three years of the training was at Elisabeth Hospital, Tilburg (prof. dr. A.J. Roukema). In this training period his special interest to quality of life studies and attention to the elderly patient was developed. He registries as surgeon in October 2002. Subsequently he followed a training program of vascular surgery at Antonius Hospital, Nieuwegein (prof.dr. F.L. Moll). Since 2004 he is appointed as staff surgeon at the Amphia Hospital. He is program leader of vascular surgery with special attention to minimal invasive surgery, peripheral arterial disease and the elderly patient.
It was the aim of his appointment to prepare a solid training situation for surgical residents and to develop scientific awareness. In 2007 he was appointed as assistant trainer, until 2021 he was trainer of general surgery residents. In 2008 he received the award best trainer of the Amphia hospital. The other goal was develop a scientific research program. In collaboration with the department of psychology of the University of Tilburg (prof.dr. J. de Vries) various quality of life studies could be developed. He started different prospective trails with patients form the Amphia Hospital. One topic of his research is about safety and prevention(reduction of complications like infection, mortality and delirium) in surgery. The other main topic of the scientific program includes the elderly patient and the outcome of surgery. Two PhD programs (S. Steunenberg and C. Peters) were about the outcome of critical ischemia of the elderly in relation to quality of life which is financed by the Nuts Ohra founds (170.000 euro). During this PhD program the collaboration with medical psychology department of prof.dr. J. de Vries is further intensified. The role of delirium, quality of life and various risk factor in the elderly were analysed in other PhD programs. In October 2015 a novel PhD project (T. Janssen) concerning the role of prehabilitation of the fragile elderly during major abdominal surgery was started(180.000 euro). This project is in collaboration with the department of epidemiology (prof. dr. E. Steyerberg, EMC and LUMC) and prof. dr. F. Mattace-Raso department of geriatrics, EMC.
Since October 2019, the scientific collaboration with the vascular department of the university of Leuven resulted in the position of visiting professor at the department of cardiovascular science. At the moment there is a jointly PhD program (A. Meulenbroek) concerning prehabilitation and prevention of delirium in vascular surgery. This project has co financing of the Amphia Hospital and is also in collaboration with above mentioned scientific partners.
The author is co-principal investigator of a European post market clinical follow up study of endovascular system of infra renal aortic aneurysm and the effect on quality of life and health status. At the moment he develops a journey app concerning various aspects of aortic surgery and pre and re habilitation.
He has authored and co-authored over 130 articles in national and international journals.
