Bio
For more than 40 years he has been conducting research in the field of (psychology of) mathematics education, with a special interest in learning and teaching mathematical concepts and skills in pre-primary and primary education. Together with his colleagues and collaborators, he has been doing research on all kinds of aspects of preparatory and elementary mathematics didactics: emergent numerical understanding and patterning skills, basic arithmetic operations, mental and written arithmetic, computational estimation, rational number knowledge, mathematical word problems and context problems, computer programming ... In these investigations, they attempt to integrate psychological and mathematics educational theories using a wide variety of research methods and techniques, including individual interviews, eye movement registration and teaching experiments. In addition to research in the curricular field of mathematics, Lieven Verschaffel has also conducted research in various other curricular domains including reading comprehension, writing, foreign language learnings, music, and history.
