Career Trajectory
Bio
Dr. Leila Zarei is passionate about method development for analysis of pharmaceutical, industrial, agricultural and biological compound in different matrices. Her research focuses on analytical method development for a rapid and robust detection of chemical compounds.
Background
She obtained her Bachelor degree in Chemistry in 2006 from Tabriz University, Iran. During the undergraduate period in Tabriz University, her research focuses on study and identification of the Thiophene Schiff Base Complex.
She worked in an Agricultural Testing Laboratory after her bachelor graduation.
In 2011 she graduated from Isfahan University of Technology in the field Analytical Chemistry. During her the master project, she expertise in analytical method development using chemiluminescence spectroscopy to analysis the trace level of amino acids and pharmaceutical compounds in human serum.
She worked as an Analyst in Industrial and Agricultural Testing Laboratory after she received her master degree.
She obtained her PhD from University of New South Wales (UNSW) in April 2018. Her PhD thesis was entitled “Development of light-addressable electrode arrays towards the application of DNA hybridization biosensor”. Based on her research experience with analytical method development and surface chemistry, she fabricated a modified Si(II) electrode array for detection of DNA using light activated electrochemistry.
She then started working as Instrument Chemist in Australian Laboratory Services (ALS Environmental) in Sydney, Australia after her PhD graduation in 2018 where she conducted analytical testing for environmental and agricultural compounds and their residues within a commercial laboratory using LC-MS/MS technique (running, processing and reporting). She analysed the chemical compound with adhering to ISO 17025 for method development and validation.
Dr Leila Zarei joined the Global Centre for Environmental Remediation (GCER), University of Newcastle, Australia, as a Research Fellow in the Organic Analytical Laboratory in November 2022. Her key skills are method development of remediation specific project protocols, and subsequent optimisation and validation analyses. She also oversees the working operation and ongoing maintenance of specialised analytical instrumentation, including HPLC, GC, LC-/GC-MS-MS, UV- Vis-NIR, FT-IR, TGA and TGA-IR systems for organic contaminant analysis and materials characterizations as well as providing of routine operation, training and guidance to UON staff and students utilising analytical equipment
Her research goal is to develop analytical method for trace level detection as well as fabrication of smart surfaces of sensor/biosensor for diagnosing application and monitoring environmental pollutant.
