Research Interests / Professional Overview
Dr. Leila Jahangiri completed her B.D.S. from King's College, University of London (UK) and D.M.D. training, Certificate in Prosthodontics, and Masters of Medical Sciences degrees (M.M.Sc.) from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where she was the recipient of Joseph L. Henry Award for "Overall Achievement in Clinical and Research Training and Contribution to the School." Having taught undergraduates and residents in dentistry and Prosthodontics at Harvard, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and New York University College of Dentistry, her expertise is in innovative curriculum development and teaching effectiveness. She is the Chair of the Department of Prosthodontics at NYU (since 2002). Her clinical areas of expertise include extensive crown and bridge reconstructions, implant prosthodontics, esthetic dentistry, and removable prostheses. She has been an active clinician, researcher and teacher since 1991. Dr. Jahangiri is the recipient of the New York University’s Distinguished Teaching Award (2014) and Honorary Fellow of the Academy of Distinguished Educators (NYU Dentistry 2015).
Her mission as an educator is to teach the latest proven techniques and materials to the predoctoral students and assure an extensive clinical experience for the postgraduate residents. As a teacher, she has an expertise in curriculum development including Problem Based Learning (PBL) and electronic curriculum development. Dr. Jahangiri's scholarship remains focused on Teaching Effectiveness strategies particularly related to classroom and clinical teaching. The department has made significant strides to develop its faculty in utilizing multiple teaching strategies for effective education. Research on teaching effectiveness has become a scholarly focus of many faculty in the department of Prosthodontics. A myriad of techniques are utilized to enhance self-directed learning, improve instruction, and institute peer and self evaluations. The faculty in the department of Prosthodontics are commited to educational excellence. A Guide To Better Teaching (2012) co-authored with Tom Mucciolo is used as a core text in three business schools, several dental/medical schools, and corporations.
Dr. Jahangiri has established an extensive predoctoral implant curriculum at New York University. This integrated curriculum is embedded within the core of several courses and allows the undergraduate student to gain first hand experience with implant treatment modality, while serving patients with the latest technology. The program has received national and international recognition and the department conducts unique Global Training Initiative Workshops to help dental schools from around the world to achieve their curriculum goals in training the new generation in Implant Dentistry.
Dr. Jahangiri is responsible for the oversight of the predoctoral and postgraduate Prosthodontics curriculum. She gives many lectures to the undergraduates and postgraduates, is actively involved in clinical supervision, and mentors students and faculty in research. She has served as a consultant, member, or chaired many dental, medical, Prosthodontic educational committees. Additionally, Dr. Jahangiri is an active member and fellow of numerous organizations. She has Chaired the Education Committee of the American College of Prosthodontics and has been an Advisory Board Member of the Institute for Professional Development, Associated Medical Schools of New York.
Currently, Dr. Jahangiri serves as an NYU Senator (representing the College of Dentistry) and also serves on the Steering Committee Council of Senate.
