Bio
Dr Mark Leeson is a Part-time Reader in Communication Systems (having taken flexible retirement in 2020) in the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick, UK, which he joined in 2000. Prior to this, he received the degrees of BSc and BEng with First Class Honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Nottingham, UK, in 1986. He then obtained a PhD in Engineering from the University of Cambridge, UK, in 1990. From 1990 to 1992 he worked as a Network Analyst for National Westminster Bank in London, UK. He returned to academic life in 1992 as a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of East London. From 1994 until 1998 he was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Manchester Metropolitan University and then a Lecturer in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at Brunel University, London, from 1998-2000.
Mark’s major research interests are optical communication systems, coding and machine learning. He has around 300 publications and has supervised over 20 successful research students. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and a Fellow of both the UK Institute of Physics and the UK Higher Education Academy. He was elected to the EPSRC Peer Review College in 2003 and has served to date, assessing many grant proposals. He has also acted as a reviewer for overseas bodies in Finland, Norway, Kazakhstan, Germany, Israel, Hong Kong and Bulgaria.
Mark was an Associate Editor for IEEE Communications Letters from 2011 to 2014, an Associate Technical Editor for the IEEE Communications Magazine from 2012-2018 and an Editorial Board Member of the Nano Communication Networks Journal from 2012-2018. He is a regular reviewer for diverse academic journals and has examined over 40 PhDs to date. He has served as External Examiner for several UK taught programmes at London South Bank, Essex, Solent, Liverpool John Moores and Aston Universities.
