My current research focuses on the genetic factors that influence cancer risk. I have successfully developed comprehensive breast and ovarian cancer risk models, the first of their kind, on the basis of all known risk factors (genetic and non-genetic) for the diseases (doi: 10.1038/s41436-018-0406-9). This required the development of novel theoretical approaches and optimised algorithms to allow such a computationally intensive task to be performed in a clinically appropriate time scale. It is recommended in the NICE guidelines (CG164) and is used by thousands of health care professionals around the world, allowing stratification by risk and facilitating individualised, informed decision-making on prevention therapies and screening, leading to better outcomes for individuals and a more efficient use of public resources.
