Bio
Dr Laurent Vivien is CNRS Director of Research at the Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, a joint Laboratory of CNRS, University of Paris Sud and University of Paris Saclay, France. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from Polytechnique School, Palaiseau, France in 2001 in pioneering work on nonlinear optical properties of carbon nanotubes for optical limiting applications. After two years as a postdoctoral researcher, he joined the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) at the Institute of Fundamental electronic (IEF), Orsay, France. His research activities focus on the development of fundamental concepts for silicon photonics including optoelectronic and hybrid photonic devices. His team was among the first to demonstrate high-speed waveguide integrated germanium photodetectors, in collaboration with CEA-Leti and STMicroelectronics, and carrier depletion based silicon modulators. Dr Laurent Vivien has also been at the forefront of the development of hybrid integration of carbon nanotubes on Si photonics platform and recently on high-speed Pockels effect in strained silicon waveguides. From 2006 to 2016, he was in charge of the Silicon Photonics Group at C2N. Since 2016, he has served as Deputy Director of C2N and Director of the Photonics Department . During his career he has published over 400 international peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, holds 8 patents and has supervised the research of more than 20 PhD students and 10 post-doctoral fellows. As a leading expert in silicon photonics, Dr Laurent Vivien is regularly invited to prestigious international conferences including plenary, tutorial and keynote talks.l Among the distinctions for high impact research performed in his group, he received the Consolidator European Research Council (ERC) grant. He also serves as General Chair of several OSA, IEEE and SPIE conferences on photonics.
