I am a bioengineer with academic and industry experience translating regenerative therapeutics to clinical use. As an academic researcher, I want to understand how adipose tissue contributes to tissue pathology and develop novel adipose-derived therapeutics to improve health.
I have always been interested in health research and using engineering principles to solve complex pathobiologic problems. I attended the University of Pittsburgh for undergraduate education in bioengineering where I observed surgical procedures, interacted with clinicians and worked in a translational research laboratory studying neural transdifferentiation of adipose stem cells (PMID: 16217495).
I continued to pursue interests in neural engineering in graduate school where I designed a peripheral nerve guide that extended the gap length over which nerves regenerate using controlled release of glial cell line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). Following in vitro prototype verification with dorsal root ganglion models, I performed in vivo proof of concept testing in a Sprague Dawley sciatic nerve transection model and measured nerve repair with electrophysiology and gait kinematics. After completion of my doctoral degree, my mentor, Kacey Marra PhD, continued to utilize the nerve guides in a non-human primate nerve injury model and has since formed a start-up company commercializing the technology. This work resulted in multiple first-author publications (listed below) and three patents held by the University of Pittsburgh.
Following graduate school, I held a Scientist position at Allergan Medical (now Abbvie), where I designed hyaluronic acid (HA)– collagen (CN) hydrogels to improve autograft revascularization. I led a scientific team to design experimental biomaterials with HA conjugated with Vitamin C, carbohydrate moieties, or extracellular matrix proteins. While working in industry, I was trained in customer discovery, raw material sourcing, product development, document control and FDA regulatory processes. This work resulted in 2 additional patents.
Upon returning to academia, I led a collaboration between UPitt Plastic Surgery and the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation (MTF) generating preclinical and clinical efficacy data for a new acellular adipose matrix product derived from cadaver adipose. The adipose extracellular matrix was evaluated using cell lines, mouse and rat models, and in 10 human subjects; it is now commercially available under the tradename Renuva. Documentation compiled during these studies was used in FDA registration as an HCT/P product.
In 2019, I became an independent investigator in Plastic Surgery as an assistant professor in the tenure track. My lab focuses on understanding how adipose tissue contributes to chronic disorders such as metabolic disease, cancer, joint and fascial pain, and neural degenerative disease. The ultimate goal for understanding how adipose alters cell metabolism and inflammation is to not only enable therapeutic intervention, but also to discover how to extract beneficial resources from adipose, such as stem cells and cell-derived products and enable tissue regeneration.
Throughout my career, I have consistently demonstrated a high aptitude for creatively designing and prototyping products for clinical translation and have successfully led teams to transition products from the laboratory to the clinic.
