个人简介
Laura Dempere-Marco is an associate professor in the Department of Engineering at Universitat de Vic-Universitat Central de Catalunya (UVic-UCC).
She graduated in Physics (1998) and obtained an MSc degree in Physics (1999) from Universitat de València. In 2000, she was awarded an MSc degree in Remote Sensing and Image Processing Technologies from the University of Edinburgh. She then continued her doctoral studies at the Department of Computing at Imperial College London and obtained her Ph.D. in Computer Vision in 2004. Her thesis was focused on expert knowledge acquisition from visual search behavior, as derived from eye-tracking experiments, to assist radiologists in the diagnostic process. In particular, the thesis combined two basic aspects: 1) use of artificial vision techniques for extracting quantitative information from medical images, and 2) perception, visual attention deployment and biological fundamentals of visual processing in the brain. She then moved as postdoctoral researcher to UPF, where she was awarded in 2005 a "Juan de la Cierva" Fellowship and in 2008 a "Ramon y Cajal" Fellowship within the Computational Neuroscience Group. In 2014 she was appointed as Associate Professor at UPF. In October 2015 she moved to Universitat de Vic-Universitat Central de Catalunya (UVic-UCC) as Dean of the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering, a position which she occupied until October 2017.
Her research interests include visual attention deployment, the relationship between eye movements and attention, and modeling of neural dynamics in visual processes. By understanding how eye movement strategies are employed by humans in order to solve complex visual tasks, it is possible to gain remarkable insights into the active vision paradigm for the subsequent development of more efficient artificial systems. Although the visual search mechanisms have been researched for many years, accurate and non-intrusive measurements of eye movements have only become possible in the last few decades with the development of eye-tracking technologies. With the availability of these data, the study of visual search may be tackled by following two complementary approaches: 1) modeling the processes underlying visual search (both mechanistically and phenomenologically) and 2) analyzing the sequences of eye movements recorded from human observers while performing a visual search task. Her research is thus focused on the integration of these two approaches and is tackled from two different perspectives, those offered by Computer Vision and Computational Neuroscience of Vision. She is interested in both theoretical developments to obtain a fundamental understanding of vision processes and their practical applications, with special emphasis in medical image understanding and neuropsychology.
She has published over 30 papers in indexed journals and international conferences. She is also co-inventor of an international patent and received the Cum Laude Poster Award in the SPIE 2003 Medical Imaging Conference.
