个人简介
My research examines the decades-long collective action problem of agricultural nonpoint source pollution. I focus primarily on U.S. farmlands, where voluntary adoption on on-farm conservation practices has failed to improve water quality. I focus on three areas that present substantive challenges for protecting water quality: (1) the evolution of collective action in agricultural landscapes; (2) the role of social capital among farmers and with other stakeholders, such as government actors, in farmer decision-making; and (3) the influence of biophysical conditions, infrastructure, and monitoring data in shaping feedbacks between social and natural systems. As a human-environment geographer, my research is situated at the intersection of three interdisciplinary sub-fields: institutional dimensions of global environmental change, sustainability science, and agricultural geography. I employ mixed methods of semi-structured interviews, spatial analysis, and inferential statistics in my work.
A central focus of my work is the role that collective incentives play in motivating collective action to protect water quality in agricultural landscapes, whether imposed through regulations or from peer pressure. My research in the Florida Everglades demonstrated that group compliance played a crucial role in shaping farmers’ willingness to share knowledge, draw on reputations, and challenge social norms to change water management practices. Current and future work examines both collaborative watershed governance and private land conservation. These projects explore: the challenges and tradeoffs of responding to large-scale hydrological interdependencies with the generating and maintaining active participation among local government officials; farmer adaptation to flooding and long-term land use drivers of increased flooding; spatial and qualitative analysis on the drivers and distribution of cover crop adoption; and the influence of participatory and peer water quality monitoring in shaping farmers perceptions on responsibility for nutrient impairment of shared waterbodies.
