个人简介
Dr Mirimin completed a BSc in 2002 in Natural Sciences in University of Ferrara (Italy) and a PhD in Zoology in 2007 in University College Cork (Ireland). Dr Mirimin conducted postdoctoral research for 7 years in UCC, GMIT, NUIG (Ireland) and Stellenbosch University (South Africa). Since January 2015, Dr Mirimin has been a Principal Investigator in the Marine and Freshwater Research Centre (MFRC) and a Lecturer in Aquatic Ecology in the Department of Natural Resources & the Environment, School of Science and Computing, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT, Ireland).
Dr Mirimin’s academic record includes 17 years of international research experience in molecular ecology, co-authored 39 peer-reviewed scientific articles, numerous non-peer-reviewed scientific reports/manuscripts, including a book chapter, and more than 20 talks at international scientific conferences/symposia worldwide (two of which as invited speaker). Dr Mirimin main area of expertise is conservation genetics and applied molecular biology. Specifically, Dr Mirimin has extensive experience in the development and application of molecular tools, including environmental DNA metabarcoding and High Throughput Sequencing and qPCR analysis, for the study of species of economic and ecologic importance, with particular attention to aquatic organisms, such as marine mammals, finfish, crustaceans and bivalves. In the past five years, Dr Mirimin has attracted research funding for over 2.4M euro. Dr Mirimin is currently Coordinator of the Marine Invasive Species Ireland (MISI) project (https://mfrc-gmit.ie/projects/conservation/marine-invasive-species-ireland/) and coordinator of the genetic screening of bivalve larvae project (https://mfrc-gmit.ie/projects/sustainability/genetic-screening-of-zooplankton/). To date, Dr Mirimin has successfully supervised 2 PhD, 7 MSc students and 14 BSc students. Currently, Dr Mirimin is supervising 4 PhD, 1 MSc and 3 BSc students.
Through its MFRC/GMIT affiliation, Dr Mirimin is member of EuroMarine and the European Marine Board and collaborate with a wide range of SMEs, multinational industries, universities and research institutes nationally and internationally. Dr Mirimin projects involve policy driven research to support decisions relating to the management of commercial fisheries, aquaculture and marine ecosystems as well as the conservation of biodiversity.
