Education and Training:
Ludovico Abenavoli get his medical education at the “Catholic University”, Rome (Italy), and he graduated in medicine in 2002. From 2002 to 2003, he get post-graduate master on “Alcohol-related problems and diseases” at the University of Florence (Italy). From 2005 to 2006, he was fellow at the Liver Unit, Hôpital Saint Antoine, University Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris VI, Paris (France). In 2007, he specialized in Internal Medicine, at the “Catholic University”, Rome (Italy). From 2008 to 2009, he get post-graduate master on “Internal medicine diagnostic ultrasound and eco-guided therapies” at the “Catholic University”, Rome (Italy). In 2010, he obtained academic doctorate (Ph.D.) in nutrition at the University “Tor Vergata”, Rome (Italy). From 2008 to 2016, he was assistant professor in gastroenterology at the Department of Health Sciences, University “Magna Graecia”, Catanzaro (Italy). In 2010, he was coordinator of the “Young hepatologists commission” of Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (A.I.S.F.). In 2011, he was invited researcher in the Liver Unit, Hôpital Jean Verdier, University Paris XIII, Paris (France). From 2012 to 2014, he was invited professor at the University of Batna (Algeria). Since 2014, he is invited professor at the University of Novi Sad (Serbia). In 2015, he was selected for the High Education Teaching Program - Erasmus+, at the University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania), and from 2016 was appointed invited professor. Since 2016, he is associate professor in gastroenterology at the Department of Health Sciences, University “Magna Graecia”, Catanzaro (Italy). In 2018, he was invited professor at the Taras Shevchenko National University, Kiev (Ukraine). In 2017, he obtained the national qualification as a full professor in gastroenterology.
Scientific Societies and editorial activities:
Ludovico Abenavoli is a member of: Italian Society of Gastroenterology (S.I.G.E.), Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (A.I.S.F.).
From 2012 to 2015, he was board member of University Gastroenterology Education Committee (UNIGASTRO). From 2013 to 2017, he is a board member of Italian Society of Gastroenterology (S.I.G.E.).
He is an editorial board member of the following Journals: Annals of Hepatology; World Journal of Hepatology; World Journal of Gastroenterology; Gastroenterology Research; Frontiers in Addictive Disorders. He is also editor in chief of Reviews on Recent Clinical Trials.
He serves as a reviewer for several international peer reviewed scientific Journals.
He was guest editor of the thematic issue: “Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in clinical practice” on Reviews on Recent Clinical Trials (2014), “Alcoholic liver disease: from bench to bedside” on Reviews on Recent Clinical Trials (2016), “New advances in the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease” on Pharmaceuticals (2018), “Mediterranean diet in the era of nutrigenomics” on Medicina (scheduled 2020).
Research achievements:
Ludovico Abenavoli is author of 206 (publications in peer-reviewed international Journals (total impact factor: 407,559; Google Scholar H-index: 39; Scopus H-index: 28; WOS H-index: 27), and of 9 chapter books (updated October 2019).
His main contributions in the field include: 1) the efficacy of new treatment in alcoholic liver disease and alcohol dependence patients; 2) the development of new non-invasive tools for diagnosis and follow-up in liver diseases; 3) the study of the relationship between insulin-resistance and chronic liver diseases, and in particular with chronic infection by hepatitis C virus; 4) the development of new treatment in overweight/obese patients with liver steatosis, included the evaluation of the Mediterranean diet effects; 5) the study of pathogenetic link between gut microbiota and liver disease; 6) the epidemiology of chronic infection by hepatitis C virus in Africa.
