Career Trajectory
Bio
Kylie Agnew-Francis is a medicinal chemist and postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Queensland, Australia, where she obtained both her BSc (Hons) and Ph.D. Under the supervision of Prof. Craig Williams and Prof. Luke Guddat. She successfully obtained her Ph.D. in 2019, which was focused around the in-silico design, synthesis and testing of a library of novel antifungal drugs targeting a protein within the branched-chain amino acid biosynthesis pathway. Accordingly, Kylie has a strong background in synthetic organic chemistry, particularly in the area of synthesising challenging heteroatom dense motifs. She also possesses significant experience in natural products research, as well as in genetics and biochemistry labs, specifically in designing and preparing genome libraries for WGS, genetic transformation, cell-based assays for testing drug efficacy, and in performing various enzyme assays to determine inhibition parameters.
Kylie's research interests primarily lie in the pursuit of drug design and development campaigns addressing difficult or under-researched clinical concerns, and the use of novel bioisosteric approaches to improve drugability and drug efficacy. She currently works under the guidance of Professor Avril Robertson as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the area of anti-fungal drug design targeting the emerging pathogen, Candida auris.
Kylie is also interested in the therapeutic value and biological diversity of Australian native mushrooms, and leads projects in collaboration with industry partners to investigate some of these unique and under-explored species.
