Research Summary:
In the late 1970’s, Dr. Kim and his lab developed tissue culture methods for isolating and maintaining enriched populations of human oligodendrocytes derived from epilepsy surgery and post-mortem material. These culture methods have been employed by many investigators world-wide in MS-related studies. Using cultured human oligodendrocytes, Dr. Kim has investigated the morphological, electrophysiological, and immunological properties of oligodendrocytes in order to understand the pathogenesis of MS in which oligodendrocytes and myelin are lost.
Dr. Kim’s current research interest is centered on how to promote the proliferation of human oligodendrocyte/oligodendrocyte precursors in culture using various growth factors that include FGF, IGF, and PDGF. If he could recruit oligodendrocytes that are remaining in the MS lesions to proliferate and remyelinate axons, it would be the definitive and best treatment for MS.
