Vicarious calibration
Relied on ground-based measurements at selected test sites including those in the desert southwest of the US to provide absolute radiometric calibration. Thome has applied the method to over 25 imaging sensors (both airborne and spaceborne) across NASA, DoE, DoD, and commercial providers. The work included evaluating the radiometric calibration of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection radiometer (ASTER), MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Multiangle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) on the Terra platform, MODIS on the Aqua platform, the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) and Hyperion on Earth Observer-1 platform, and numerous commercial imaging sensors.
Absolute radiometric calibration
Served as the Calibration Lead for the Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) on the Landsat Data Continuity Mission. He serves as the Instrument Scientist for VIIRS and lead of the CLARREO Pathfinder Independent Calibration.
Atmospheric correction
Developed algorithms for the atmospheric correction of the solar reflective bands of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on the Terra platform
Serving as the Atmospheric Correction Lead for CEOS’ IVOS Working Group leading to development of best practices for the atmospheric correction of imagery and for vicarious calibration.
