个人简介
I am a development and environmental geographer. My work is concerned with exacerbating inequalities and injustices in the Global South, particularly in Nepal, India and the Himalayan region. I've experienced poverty and marginalisation in the remote Nepali hills. I have a strong passion to shift 'thinking' and 'doing', not just talking, and to make a difference - a more socially and environmentally just world.
My work is in the interdisciplinary analysis of social and environmental justice, focusing on the intersection of development, environment and society. Over the years, my interest encompasses six key areas: a) political ecology, b) disaster justice, c) indigenous knowledge, d) climate change adaptation, e) development planning and policy, and f) food security and livelihoods. Connecting these is an overarching analytical thread of justice, as both redistribution as well as recognition.
I am a critical pragmatist. I use grounded analysis of socio-ecological dynamics through a multi-scale and multi-actor perspective where the role of unequal power relations in constituting a politicised environment is a central theme. I give particular attention to the ways in which problems of environment and development are linked to systems of social hierarchy and political and economic control, which affect poor and disadvantaged groups. Most of my work is interdisciplinary and empirically based which integrates social and natural science methodologies to examine the inter-relationship between social and natural systems. My focus remains on the socially engaged work that is conceptually solid and practically useful in addressing diverse justice challenges.
