Bio
Hidenori Koyama has been focused on the research questions regarding vascular complications in diabetes, through molecular and biological basic studies and clinical studies. As a post-doctoral fellow in the University of Washington, he examined molecular mechanisms for arterial smooth muscle proliferation (Cell 87: 1069, 1996; JCI 100: 875, 1997), and apoptosis of human endothelial cells (J Exp Med 187: 579, 1998; Mol Cell 1: 553, 1998). He continued to examine regulatory mechanisms of arterial smooth muscle cells (Circ Res 88: 460, 2001; ATVB 22: 1286, 2002; ATVB 22: 1573, 2002), with his basic findings were extended to carotid atherosclerosis in diabetic patients (Diabetes 51: 1523, 2002; Circulation 108: 524, 2003). He then examined the importance of AGEs and its receptor, RAGE, in diabetic and non-diabetic vascular complications (ATVB 25: 2587, 2005; Diabetes 55: 2245, 2006; Mol Med 13: 625, 2007; ATVB 27: 147, 2007; Metabolism 57: 1452, 2008; Atherosclerosis 211: 431, 2010; Metabolism 60: 453, 2011; Atherosclerosis 234: 329, 2014), and endothelial inflammation (FASEB J 33:3575-3589, 2019) . Of note, RAGE is found to be involved also in adiposity and metabolic syndrome (ATVB 25: 2587, 2005; Diabetes 62: 478-489, 2013). Recently, his research has been focused on the importance of psycho-social factors (eg. sleep, autonomic function, fatigure) in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, heart failure, renal function, obesity, diabetes and cognition.
