Wang’s research interest is in the emerging fields of structural dynamics, especially in pioneering adaptive structures and material systems with embedded sensing, actuation and control intelligence that can on-demand alter their configurations, properties and dynamics with autonomy. He has pioneered multi-physics approaches to create new classes of structural systems, and has launched new fields of study harnessing cross-
disciplinary sciences. For example, Wang has explored a class of adaptive structures embedded with piezo-electronic circuitry network (PZT and PVDF with electrical circuits) through cross-field electromechanical integration. He has developed comprehensive models, nonlinear identification schemes, and design methodology that others adopted. His contributions in identifying and tailoring the electromechanical interaction has significantly enriched the state-of-the-art knowledge. His methodology of concurrently synthesizing the piezoelectric-electronic components and network together with the mechanical structure has been broadly followed, and has great impact in achieving unprecedented high-authority/low-power-requirement actuation and highly sensitive sensing, enabling high performance functionalities for vibration and noise mitigation, wave control, structural damage identification, and energy harvesting. In addition, Wang has initiated new cross-disciplinary fields of study in structural dynamics harnessing knowledge in biology and nanotechnology.
