As the second most common cancer and the second most common cause of cancer-related death in the United States, colorectal cancer (CRC) demands improved diagnosis and treatment. The long-term goal of my laboratory is to find new preventive measures and more efficient treatment strategies for patients diagnosed with CRC. To achieve this goal, we rely on analyses of human tumor specimens to identify critical pathways that are dysregulated during tumor formation and progression. We focus on the idea that colon tumor cells suffer from an imbalance between tumor suppressor proteins and oncoproteins, which are controlled by several regulatory pathways, including the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Understanding the underlying mechanisms behind this cell confusion phenomenon can fundamentally help us to restore cancer cells, eventually forcing them to be more sensitive for a longer period of time to standard chemotherapeutic drugs. Understanding the dysregulated pathways that are responsible for the poor prognosis of CRC progression in obese patients is another area that our lab has recently focused on, aiming toward the development of anti-cancer drugs that selectively protect and treat obesity-associated CRC. My lab has generated a strong network of collaborations with both scientists and clinical colleagues to test new ideas for therapies that will selectively target cancer cells with minimum effect on normal cells.
