Bio
Dr Joyce received her BSc in Exercise Science from High Point University and her MSc (taught) in Exercise Physiology from University of North Carolina at Greensboro. During her Master's, she served as the Graduate Assistant for the Bariatric Exercise & Lifestyle Transformation (BELT) program, which delivered exercise programs for pre- and post-operative bariatric patients. During her master's she also completed a semester exchange program at the University of Hull, during which she assisted with peripheral vascular research at Hull Royal Infirmary. Finally, as part of her capstone she was a Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation intern at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre. Moving on from her academic career, she accepted a Research Technologist post with the Cardiopulmonary Research Lab at Mayo Clinic (Arizona) partnered with the Human Integrative & Environmental Physiology lab at Mayo Clinic (Minnesota). During this time, she helped conduct a variety of studies investigating the physiologic effects hypoxia and exercise in clinical and healthy populations, as well as studies validating new technology for capturing physiologic data. After this, she decided to further her education and pursue a PhD at the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Birmingham. Her research was concentrated on renal responses to hypoxia, high altitude, and exercise, the development of immunoassays for the investigation of novel biomarkers to evaluate such physiologic responses. Following the completion of her PhD she accepted a Postdoctoral post at the University of Birmingham to both, continue her postgraduate research and initiate new lines of research related to include the: 1) investigation of pulse oximetry as a tool for the detection/prediction acute mountain sickness in high altitude and hypoxic environments and 2) investigation of hypoxia vs hypoxia + cold stimuli and the relative effects on the peripheral vasculature to determine whether hypoxia is an additive factor that increases frostbite susceptibility.
