Bio
Professor Kazunari Akiyoshi was the first to develop physically cross-linked nanogels, which were formed through the self-assembly of associating polymers such as hydrophobicized polysaccharides. These nanogels act as artificial molecular chaperones, preventing aggregation and preserving the native structure of proteins. Nanogels are widely used as a new bio nanotransporter in DDS (vaccine and cancer immunotherapy) by efficiently trapping proteins in particular. They are also used as building blocks to
prepare nanogel bottom-up materials such as nanogel-crosslinking nanoparticles, hydrogels, and sheet films for DDS and tissue engineering. The functions of membrane proteins are useful in advanced nanodevices for biomedical applications. Professor Akiyoshi develops new chaperoning techniques for the effective preparation of proteoliposomes by the artificial liposome system (cell-free membrane proteinliposome system) or baculovirus-liposome fusion method. Functional proteoliposomes may open a new avenue in nanocarrier technologies for use in DDS and serve as a platform for membrane protein chips in bioanalysis and biodiagnostics.
