Dr. Dewey’s research focuses on maternal and child nutrition in vulnerable populations, with an emphasis on interventions to prevent malnutrition during the first 1000 days. She has led numerous randomized trials and cohort studies in the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Peru, Ghana, Malawi, and Bangladesh. She is an author of more than 500 publications.
Dr. Dewey's has an extensive record of professional service to WHO, UNICEF and other organizations during the past 40 years, including membership on the 2020 U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, the Board of Directors for the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, the U.S. Food and Nutrition Board for the National Academies, the WHO Guidelines Development Group on Complementary Feeding, and the WHO Guidelines Development Group on Prevention and Treatment of Wasting. She is currently a member of the WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Group of Experts (STAGE) for Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Nutrition, the FAO/WHO Expert Group on Nutrient Requirements for Children aged 0-36 Months, the Technical Advisory Group for the Investment Framework for Nutrition (World Bank) and several other advisory committees. Dr. Dewey has received several awards, including the Kellogg Prize for International Nutrition, the Macy-György Award from the International Society for Research on Human Milk and Lactation, the E.V. McCollum International Lectureship, and Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition.
