We are studying how the nervous system develops: in particular, how new nerve cells are born. This involves a cell ceasing division and withdrawing from the proliferative region of the early neural tube. This withdrawal involves the cell detaching from its neighbours in a process known as delamination. This enables the new born nerve cell to migrate to a new position and facilitates its connection with other neurons and so creation of the network that underpins the functional nervous system. Our recent work has uncovered how proteins interact to mediate delamination. In particular, we have discovered a wheel-like microtubule structure and demonstrated how these microtubules interact with other structural proteins (actin and myosin) to release the cell from the ventricular surface of the neural tube.
