I am a medical graduate from Kermanshah university of medical sciences. I completed a post graduate course in laser therapy and laser safety licensed by State Research and Clinical Center of Laser Medicine of Russia in 2009. I chose the topic of tinnitus treatment with low-level laser therapy (currently called photobiomodulation therapy or PBMT) for my thesis, and since then I have been working on tinnitus. In order to increase my knowledge about tinnitus and its mechanism and neural basis, I started a PhD course in auditory neuroscience at Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2016, which has been completed. My strategy for working on tinnitus included an animal phase that ended up as my PhD project and a human phase that I want to start as soon as I can. The animal phase of the project focused on the two main problems of tinnitus including its assessment and treatment. Currently, all tinnitus assessment tools are subjective, relying on self-report. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing is a cost-effective, non-invasive assessment tool that can be performed by acoustic and optoacoustic (laser light-induced) stimulation. In the animal phase of the project, two stimulation methods were performed in the ABR test in the rat animal model to evoke the auditory potential, and the changes caused by salicylate-induced tinnitus in the two groups were determined and compared. Then PBMT was used to treat tinnitus and the results were evaluated by behavioral test, ABR test and immunohistochemistry. Fortunately, the animal phase of the project was successful in both diagnosis and treatment of tinnitus and the findings were confirmed using objective methods. Currently, I wish to investigate acoustic and optoacoustic ABRs in the assessment of tinnitus and also PBMT in the treatment of hearing disorders, especially tinnitus in humans, and I believe that these two techniques can open a new horizon in the objective evaluation and treatment of tinnitus.
