Career Trajectory
Bio
I received my Ph.D. degree in 1998 at the University of Helsinki with physiological zoology as the main subject. In 2009 I became Adjunct Professor (docent) in marine biology. My main employment has been as a researcher/senior research scientist at the Finnish Institute of Marine Research (1991-2008) and subsequently at the Marine Research Centre of the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) (2009 – present). Between 2014-2017 I served as the Head of Unit of Arctic Marine Research at Syke and 2018-2022 as the HoU of Marine Pollution. Currently (2023--) I am the Group Manager of the Marine Pollution Group at Syke.
I started my ecotoxicological research in his M.Sc. by examining the effects of oil and a dispersant on blue mussels. Then I focused on ecophysiology of amphipods for my Ph.D. thesis. Returning to ecotoxicology, between 2001-2004 I acted as the workpackage leader in a large pan-European EU project "Biological Effects of Environmental Pollution in Marine Coastal Ecosystems" (BEEP). Between 2009-11 I was the coordinator of the Baltic Sea BONUS+ programme "Biological Effects of Anthropogenic Chemical Stress: Tools for the Assessment of Ecosystem Health" (BEAST). Since then I and my research team have been involved as experts in marine ecotoxicology in a number of national and international projects, most importantly the EU funded "Chemical Munitions Search and Assessment" (CHEMSEA), "Decision Aid for Marine Munitions" (DAIMON), and "Integrated Oil Spill Response Actions and Environmental Effects". (GRACE). Currently (2023) I am coordinating the INTERREG Baltic Sea Region project "Application of biological effects methods in monitoring and assessment of contaminants in the Baltic Sea" (BEACON) (2022-2024) and the BIODIVERSA+ programme project "New approaches in determining the impacts of chemical pollution to protect the biodiversity of the Baltic Sea" (Detect2Protect) (2023-25).
I have been active in promoting the development and use of biological effects methods in monitoring and assessment of marine pollution as an invited expert in HELCOM, ICES/HELCOM/GEF Baltic Sea Regional Project (BSRP) and in ICES expert groups (WGBEC [1999- ], SGEH [Chair, 2008-2011], WKIMON/WGIMC [2007-2009]), SGEFF (Co-chair, 2022-2024) as well as co-chairing a number of theme sessions in international congresses encompassing the topic, including ICES Annual Science Conference (2003, 2007 and 2011), Baltic Sea Science Conference (2009 and 2011) and Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Europe (2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2016). I was a member of SETAC Europe Council (2012-2017) and was the co-chair of Science Committee and Local Organising Committee of the SETAC Europe Annual Meeting in Helsinki 2019.
My ecotoxicological research is targeted on the use of biomarkers of pollution exposure and effects on marine organisms, including field and laboratory experiments using bivalves, crustaceans and fish. The parameters studied have covered neurotoxicity, oxidative stress responses, genotoxicity, detoxification, accumulation of chemicals, bioenergetics and behavioural changes. I have published over 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals with a current (2023) h-index of 33 (Google Scholar Citations). I was Guest Editor for the Marine Pollution Bulletin Special Issue "The BEEP Project: Effects of Environmental Pollution in Marine Coastal Ecosystems – Biomonitoring in the Baltic Sea" (2006) and Guest Editor for the Marine Environmental Research Special Issue "Dumped munitions" (2020). Currently I serve as a Review Editor in Frontiers in Marine Science - Marine Pollution (2021--). I have performed more than 100 reviews for 39 peer reviewed international scientific journals. I served as the Lead Author of the ecotoxicology chapter in the textbook "Biological Oceanography of the Baltic Sea" (2017). I have supervised two PhD and 8 MSc theses and being pre-examiner/examiner/opponent in 8 PhD theses.
