Family structure in the United States is constantly shifting. The definition and reality of what constitutes a “family” has changed substantially, from a heterosexual, two-parent household to a complex, diverse, and almost impossible to define living arrangements. Within the many factors that determine what a family is I am interested in the intersection of paid and unpaid work (caregiving, household maintenance) in families and the relationship between family structure and poverty. Specifically, I focus in my research on families in which the father is the primary caregiver for children and the mother is the primary breadwinner (at-home father families). These families are important to study because they represent a dramatic shift in our understanding of families; they challenge traditional gendered expectations; they may be associated with different children outcomes; they represent a shift in the economy from manufacturing-based employment (mostly men) to knowledge workers (in growing percentage, women); and. they are growing in percentage as gendered perceptions become more egalitarian and as the gap in education and earning potential in favor of women increases, and as traditionally masculine jobs (e.g., manufacturing, construction and mining) decline while traditionally feminine jobs (e.g., health and education) are on the rise. The importance of this shift cannot be understated as it cuts across many levels: it affects individuals, families, organizations, and social policies. The intersection of paid and unpaid work also relates to my second stream of research – poverty and social mobility in families in which at least one parent is working. I am focusing my research on the characteristics of these families and try to empirically differentiate families that are successfully engaging in social mobility (broadly defined) and families that are unsuccessful in achieving social mobility, despite the fact that there is at least one, and sometimes two, working adults in the family. In my research I follow families over time (longitudinal, within family-design), compare different families (between-families design), and try to understand the intergenerational relationship of family structure, division of paid and unpaid labor in families and intergenerational social mobility.
