个人简介
Karen is the Lead for Social Work Placements at The University of Hull. She is also the Lead for EDI and these roles align to her passion for social justice and practice based, transformative learning. Karen has a particular interest in the decolonisation of education.
She holds personal tutor responsibilities for Year One Apprentices and Year One BA Social Work students and is module leader for Children, Young People and their Families on the BA Apprentice Programme, Child and Family Social Work on the MA Social Work and Theory and Practice on the BA Social Work Programme.
Karen’s early work within older peoples and looked after children’s residential settings inspired a career in Social Work. Once qualified she gained a broad experience within statutory social work including community mental health and hospital social work before progressing to a Senior Social Work role within Youth Justice.
Her passion for social justice, human rights and participation led her to a range of children’s participation and rights-based roles which included statutory and non-statutory rights-based projects within the umbrella of Coalition for Youth.
This work included participatory appraisal, peer led research and commissioning. She collaborated with national organisations such as Carnegie Trust, The Trust for Adolescence and Citizenship Foundation in the delivery of local and national participation training.
This initiated a move to international work and her role as ‘international expert’ for the British Council involved working with NGO and governmental departments to take forward youth policy agenda’s within Macedonia whilst facilitating the establishment of a youth parliament. Her role as Children’s Trust manager continued this focus on rights-based participation and she managed a range of looked after children’s participation services alongside projects platforming the voices of black and ethnic minority communities.
Karen’s extensive experience in participatory and rights-based practice blended with a focus on research informed practice has underpinned all of her academic practices. During her 14 years as an academic she has acted as Programme Director for the MA Social Work and took responsibility for all practice-based modules, social work placements and practice educator training.
She is a stage 2 practice educator and has held responsibility for a range of modules including: Human Rights: A Global Perspective, Transformative Leadership and Contemporary issues in Statutory Social Work Practice. Karen has extensive experience teaching BA Social Work, BA Social Work Apprentice, MSc and MA Social Work, post qualifying and Erasmus Masters Social Work programmes.
