Bio
Dr Karl Fraser is a Senior Research Scientist, Nutritional Metabolomics, Food Chemistry and Structure Team in the Food Bio-based Products Group at AgResearch, New Zealand.
Dr Karl Fraser has worked on a diverse range of projects, ranging from those related to forage based agricultural systems i.e. forage, meat and milk metabolomics, to more recently biomarker discovery in the area of human health and nutrition. He has a wide range of experience in analytical chemistry and begun working in the area of metabolomics in 2005. He is the lead metabolomics researcher for the High-Value Nutrition National Science Challenge and is involved in an array of projects ranging from phenotyping a 'functional gut disorder' cohort, to researching early biomarkers of type-2 diabetes in an Asian population, to the impacts (measured by metabolomics) of consuming New Zealand meat and milk products. He is currently involved in developing a 'systems nutrition' approach to understanding mechanisms of nutrition on human health and well-being. Key skills include analytical and metabolomic method development using both GC-MS and LC-MS instrumentation, and he has considerable experience with a wide range of mass spectrometer types, along with chromatography skills in UHPLC and GC. He is the first or co-author of over 90 peer-reviewed journal articles across a broad range of topics including animal metabolism, meat and milk flavour, endophyte alkaloid analysis, and metabolomic studies on plants, microbes and animal products.
He is a graduate of the University of Auckland, with a PhD in Chemistry where he studied the development of non-targeted mass spectrometric based methods and application of these methods to tea.
