Bio
Dr. Karl E. Karlstrom is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of New Mexico. He has been at UNM since 1994. Dr. Karlstrom grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona and received his B.S. in Geology from Northern Arizona University in May 1973. He received his MS in Geology in 1977 from the University of Wyoming and Ph.D. from the University of Wyoming in May 1981. He conducted post-doctoral work at the University of New Brunswick, Canada (1981 -1982). He held professor positions at North Carolina State University (1983-1984) and Northern Arizona University (1984-1991) before coming to UNM in 1992, where he has been for the last 27 years.
His research specialties are structural geology and tectonics. His current research topics span the geologic timescale and address: the formation and stabilization of continents, the supercontinent cycle, Paleoproterozoic to Cambrian Earth Systems, and neotectonics of ongoing uplift of the Colorado Plateau-Rocky Mountain region.
