Bio
Alexander Soibel received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from
the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel, in 1995 and 2001, respectively. His M.Sc. research concentrated on
quantum effects in two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) and Ph.D. work was focused on magneto-optical visualization of
magnetic transitions and transport currents in High-Tc superconductors. In 2001, he joined Bell Laboratories, Lucent
Technologies, as a Postdoctoral Member of the Technical Staff in the Department of Semiconductor Physics Research,
where he worked on ultrashort pulse generation in mid-infrared quantum cascade (QC) lasers and on nonlinear optical
effects in mode-locked QC lasers. In 2004, he became a Senior Member of Engineering Staff in JPL, NASA/Caltech,
Pasadena, CA, USA, where he initially worked on development of mid-IR lasers, including QC lasers and Intersubband
Cascade lasers that were delivered for Tunable Laser Spectrometer, part SAM instrument on Mars Science Laboratory. He
currently works on development of infrared detectors and focal plane array for various space and Earth-based
applications. He has extensive experience in design, fabrication, and testing of III–V semiconductor detectors
and lasers, including mid-infrared Sb-based superlattice and nBn detectors. Dr. Alexander Soibel has co-authored more
than 50 refereed articles and four book chapters, and has given several invited talks at conferences.
