个人简介
Jüri Engelbrecht was born in Tallinn, Estonia in 1939. He graduated cum laude from Tallinn University of Technology in 1962 as an engineer and holds a Cand Sci (PhD) in theoretical mechanics from the same Tallinn UT (1968). After his post-doc year in Czech Technical University in Prague he joined in 1969 the Institute of Cybernetics (then of the Estonian Academy of Science, presently at the Tallinn UT) where he is working up to now. In 1981 he took his DSc from Ukrainian Acad Sci. He has been a Senior Research Fellow, Deputy Director and now the Head of the Centre for Nonlinear Studies, one of the Estonian Centres of Excellence in research which is an internationally recognized node of research.
His own research interests have shifted from theoretical mechanics towards mathematical physics and biomechanics and are presently related to complexity and nonlinear dynamics. He has worked in many universities in Europe: Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Surrey, Cambridge (he was the Fellow of Sidney Sussex), Paris 6, RWTH Aachen, Torino, Messina, Duisburg-Essen, Budapest UT, etc. Author of about 200 papers in refereed journals, and of several monographs (Pitman, Longman, Kluwer, Springer) and textbooks (in Estonian), etc. Beside research he keeps his professorship at Tallinn UT. He has won twice the Estonian Science Prize, the A. von Humboldt Research Award, Alumäe medal from the Estonian Academy of Sciences and was awarded Dr.h.c. in 1999 from the Budapest UT. In 2015 he was recognized with the highest Estonian Research Award for life-long activities. He is the member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences, the member of Academia Europaea, the member of the WAAS and other distinguished academies, societies and foundations.
