Bio
Junying Liu, PhD
NatPro Centre for Natural Products Research
School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Trinity College Dublin.
Ireland
Junying obtained her Ph.D. from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield, UK in 2012. In 2013 Junying was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Food Engineering of Nanchang University. Junying was awarded a prestigious MSCA-EI Career Fit Research Fellowship in 2019. She held this award at the University of Limerick from 2019 to 2020 and then at NatPro, the TCD Centre for Natural Product Research at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Trinity College Dublin up to October 2020. Her research project is titled “Exploiting algal cell factories with systems biology for biopharmaceutical production”. Since then Junying has worked as lead innovation scientist on the NatPro marine research platform.
Junying has worked on algal production for nearly 15 years since doing PhD in the University of Sheffield and algal bioproducts is an area of deep interest to her. In the UK her research was partially funded by Carbon Trust, UK. The primary of her research on the “Algae Biofuels Challenge” involved developing and optimising different methods for culturing and harvesting algae. Microalgae are ideal platforms with the potential to meet the large impending demand of biopharmaceutical and human nutraceutical production as they are fast-growing solar-powered biofactories. The overall aim of this and her current role in the NatPro centre is to apply a systems biology approach including genomics, transcriptomics (RNA-seq) and proteomics (ITRAQ, or DIA), along with protein structure characterisation to understanding and optimising algal biofactories for therapeutic, nutraceutical production and for carbon capture.
Her interdisciplinary training and international academic experience in chemical and biological engineering in the UK; her molecular biology expertise gained in Zhejiang University, China; her work as MSCA-EI Fellow and current role in NatPro as an innovation marine scientist will provide a solid foundation for her current innovative and visionary challenge research.
