Career Trajectory
Bio
I started my university career at the age of 16 and graduated at the age of 21 in Microbiology. I obtained two master's degrees; “Geology and environmental management of mineral resources” and “Instrumental techniques in chemistry.” In 2013, I finished my Ph.D. in “Geology and environmental management of mineral resources: Biogeochemistry” (Cum Laude, international mention) at the International University of Andalusia and the University of Huelva. My thesis was awarded first prize for the best Ibero-American scientific-technical research by the La Rábida Group (editorial). During my Ph.D., I did two international stays in Portugal at the Univ. of Algarve (three months); and in Germany at Univ. of Bayreuth (three months). During my master's and doctorate studies, I published six articles (two as a first author) in indexed journals (Q1 and Q2), one book chapter, and a book based on my thesis. My formation as a geomicrobiologist has been strengthened by many courses, including 1) Software Carpentry (Bioinformatics) workshop, UFS, South Africa, 2017 (three weeks); 2) research stays at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory, Brazil, 2016-2018 (two weeks); 3) The Geochemist's Workbench 10: Fate and Transport Modelling. Johannesburg, South Africa, 2015 (one week); 4) Introductory course Synchrotron. ALBA Synchrotron facilities. Barcelona, Spain, 2014 (one week); 5) Iron Microbiology, Univ. of Manchester/Bangor, UK, 2012 (two weeks).
In 2013, my adventure as a postdoctoral fellow started in the Biochemistry of Extremophiles Research Group (SAENSE Platform) at the Department of Microbiology and Biochemistry of the UFS (within the Top 10 universities of South Africa). I participated in projects mostly linked to the industrial sector, mainly mining, which has facilitated the transferring of my knowledge to the industrial sector and in the creation of the acid and alkaline mine drainage treatment system (bio/chemical) named “BDAS System” (Barium Carbonate Dispersed Alkaline Substrate), patent WO2016035045. This technology has been used in several mines in Africa, and Europe. The use of this patent internationally is a clear example of the impact of my research. In addition, during my four-year postdoctoral stage, I wrote more than 30 technical reports, two articles in indexed journals (Q1 and Q2), four conference articles and 17 abstract for conferences). I also developed the roadmap for the first Biogeochemical Platform in South Africa, was co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) in a national industrial water bioremediation project, and Co-PI in an international ERAMIN 1 project within the HORIZON-2020 program.
In 2017, I was promoted to senior researcher, and after that, I started leading the Environmental and Applied Microbiology group (EAMG) at the Department of Microbiology and Biochemistry (UFS). Currently, this multidisciplinary group is a niche for nine under and postgraduate students, including three honors students (end-of-degree projects), three master's, and three doctoral students. Under my supervision, nine honor students, six masters, and four Ph.D. students graduated between 2018 and 2022. The last five years in South Africa have helped me to expand my knowledge in geomicrobiology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics and to acquire new skills to manage and lead a large number of national and international projects as principal investigator and co-investigator. Between 2014 and 2022, I raised €1 976 153 (in 15 projects) in funding for my research at UFS, South Africa; €346,047 from the private sector and industry and €1,530,720 from public funds. As a Senior Researcher, I collaborated on an international UNESCO project and was PI of a national project funded by the Foundational Biodiversity Information Programme (FBIP). As the leader of AEMG, I was PI of three national projects (TIA, UFS, IMBSWORLD); I collaborated on three international projects with the Univ. of Cádiz, Princeton Univ. (USA) and Ritsumeikan Univ. (Japan), and I am Co-PI of the ERAMIN3 international project within the Horizon-EUROPA program and project associated to the mining industry (Northwest Metals Group). During 2017 and 2022, I published ten articles, two conference articles, and two book chapters, and in total, I have 42 conferences, two of them as keynote. In addition, I am an associate editor and reviewer for several indexed journals (Associate editor of the Journal of Geochemical Exploration and Reviewer editor of Frontiers in Microbiology). The quality of my work has opened the doors for me to work with pioneers in their fields, such as Professors Carlos Ayora (CSIC-Barcelona), Jose Miguel Nieto (Univ. of Huelva), Prof. Angel Valverde Portal (IRNAS-Salamanca), Alfonso Corzo (Univ. of Cádiz), Tullis Onstott (Univ. of Princeton) and Thomas L. Kieft (New Mexico Tech), Hiroshi Ogasawara (Univ. of Ritsumeikan, Japan), among others. My career growth reflects my vocation, proactivity, and leadership.
