个人简介
I am a biologist interested in understanding the impacts of invasive species on the endemic fauna in island ecosystems. In 2015, I started my master thesis at the IPNA-CSIC, working in close collaboration with a research team from the University of Manitoba. My main aim was to shed light on the pace-of-life syndromes in the invasive Barbary ground squirrel (Atlantoxerus getulus) introduced during the 20th century in Fuerteventura (Canary Islands). After that, I engaged as a self-employed biologist in a regional NGO (Asociación de Ecología Insular “Conservación en Islas”) of which I am founding partner. In 2017 I got a competitive doctoral scholarship funded by the Canarian Regional Government (TESIS2017010051) to start my PhD at the IPNA-CSIC, which focused on the impact of the introduced California kignsnake (Lampropeltis californiae) in the Canary Islands. During my PhD, I performed a multidisciplinary approach to disentangle and quantify the impacts that this invasive snake is causing in the Canarian ecosystems. Nowadays, I continue working with the California kingsnake invasion to contribute to its management.
I have participated in 1 competitive project and 8 technical assistances or contracts with local and regional administrations from the Canary Islands for total budget of 550,707.6 €. These have led to a total of 8 scientific papers—being the leading author in 5 of these and the corresponding author in 2 of them—(plus two papers submitted) in high quality journals such as Proceedings of the Royal Society B (IF 5.531), Journal of Environmental Management (IF 8.910), Scientific Reports (IF 4.997), and Ecography (IF 6.802). In addition, I have showed the results of my research in 6 international conferences and 2 national meetings in Spain, under the form of 7 oral contributions and 11 posters. Last years I have also acquired experience in raising funds, as my research has been funded by 7 competitive grants and fellowships supported by national and regional institutions for over 100.000 € (see details in ORCID). I am a regular reviewer of scientific journals—having performed one review for Journal of Zoology and two for NeoBiota—and scientific conferences, and I also have a solid background in scientific dissemination, as I participated in two regional campaigns and eight events of scientific outreach, published one paper in the general press, and attended numerous media interviews. Finally, my teaching and mentoring experience includes the supervision of two Bachelor theses.
My research has allowed me to work in close collaboration with national and international researchers from USA, Canada, France, and Germany. During my PhD I spent a month at the Seckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Center in Frankfurt (Germany) to work Dr. Dan L. Warren. This visit increased my skillset by learning about species distribution modelling from one of the top-cited authors in the field. The last year of my PhD I stayed two months at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris to work with Dr. Anthony Herrel, who leads a multidisciplinary group focused on the study of complex integrated systems evolution. There I learnt cutting-edge techniques (e.g., 3D-scanning) to use in my evolutionary and functional approaches, while expanding my collaboration network. More recently, I was invited to the Brown Tree Snake technical working group, which is an international forum involving researchers and managers working on invasive reptiles worldwide.
My career path has allowed me to acquire lab, fieldwork and analytic expertise in the study of biological invasions from a multidimensional perspective that englobes different disciplines such as: population dynamics, spatial and trophic ecology, functional morphology, species distribution modelling, behavioral ecology and evolutionary biology. Overall, my background confers me a firm base over which to continue my scientific career and develop my research interests.
