个人简介
I am a full Professor of Computational Linguistics and Speech Technology at the UCD School of Computer Science. I received a BA (Mod) in German and Mathematics from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland in 1986 and was awarded a Council of Europe Higher Education Award to undertake postgraduate studies at the University of Bielefeld, Germany. I received my doctoral degree in 1993 for my research on finite state models in speech recognition supervised by Prof. Dr. Dafydd Gibbon and was awarded the Dissertationspreis der Westfälisch-Lippischen Universitätsgesellschaft for my Dr. Phil. thesis. I worked as a wissenschaftliche Assistentin at the University of Bielefeld until 1998 when I joined the Department of Computer Science, University College Dublin. In 2002 I received a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Investigator Award to undertake research in the area of multilingual ubiquitous speech and language technology and was subsequently awarded an industry supplement to this grant to collaborate with the IBM Dublin Software Lab. I was invited to become a Faculty Fellow at the IBM Centre for Advanced Studies in Dublin in 2003 and won an IBM Innovation Award (only one in Ireland) in 2005. From 2007 to 2012, I was one of the Principal Investigators in the SFI-funded Centre for Next Generation Localisation where I led the sub-track on Speech Technology research. My primary areas of research are computational linguistics and speech technology and I am best known for my applications of computational phonology to speech recognition. My approach to speech recognition involves the application of phonetic feature detectors coupled with a constraint-based syllable recognition component based on a phonotactic model which defines the temporal relations which can exist between phonetic features in a particular language. My research group has been developing speech recognition and synthesis systems which use fine-grained linguistic information paving the way for the development of robust multilingual applications which are easily scaleable. Some of these systems have been integrated with machine translation technologies to provide speech-to-speech translation. In addition to my research, I have also provided leadership in graduate education at University College Dublin. I was UCD Deputy Registrar for Graduate Studies from 2008 to 2014 and UCD Dean of Graduate Studies from 2010 to 2014. From January to August 2015, I was on sabbatical research leave as Visiting Scholar at Wolfson College, University of Oxford until the end of February 2015, followed by a period as Gastprofessorin at the Exzellenzcluster "Multimodal Computing and Interaction" at the University of the Saarland. I also spent time at the English Department of the University of Münster.
