My clinical interests cover all viruses that can infect and cause disease in humans - their diagnosis, epidemiology, clinical presentation and management, treatment, infection control and prevention (including vaccination). My research interests are particularly focused on influenza and other respiratory viruses - their epidemiology, transmission, their management, treatment, prevention and infection control, both in hospital and community settings; viral infections in pregnancy, especially CMV, VZV and parvovirus B19; and bloodborne viruses, HIV, HBV, HCV - including other acute viral hepatitis infections, such as by HAV and HEV. I am also interested in emerging/re-emerging viral infections, such as MERS, Toscana, dengue, Zika, chikungunya, monkeypox, viral haemorrhagic fevers - especially now with the issues around climate change and the encroachment of potential vectorborne viral infections into more temperate regions.
